Prominence related conferences and workshops

2015

2014

Nov 24 2015: Workshop on Agentivity and Causation in Romance, University of Cologne

Organizers: Marta Donazzan, Marco Garcia Garcia

The aim of this workshop is to make a step forward in probing the link between causation and agentivity by investigating structures related to causative alternations across Romance languages. The focus will be both theoretical (probing the notion of causal responsibility itself via semantic and cognitive notions such as volition and control) and empirical (relating different types of causation to their surface realisations across Romance languages).

Venue: Klosterstr. 79b, 50931 Cologne

Sept 2 2015: Workshop on Prominence in Pragmatics, University of Leiden

Organizers: Klaus von Heusinger (Cologne), Petra Schumacher (Cologne), Ken Turner (Brighton)

This one-day workshop is organized as part of the 48th Annual Meeting of the Societas Linguistica Europaea at Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL) from Sept 2 - 5 2015. The assumption that prominence is a structural notion of discourse organization reflecting relations between individuals, events, etc. will be a central theme discussed in the workshop. The most well-studied domain in this respect is reference to individuals but there will be also contributions that look at other notions of prominence in pragmatics.

Venue: Leiden University Centre for Linguistics (LUCL)

June 11 - 12 2015: Workshop on Perspective- and context-shift in language, University of Cologne

Organizers: Stefan Hinterwimmer, Hanna Rütten

There are many linguistic expressions – such as logophoric or  anti-logophoric pronouns, predicates of personal taste and modal verbs  – whose interpretation is dependent on the perspective of an  individual which can, but need not be the speaker. At the same time,  in Free Indirect Discourse some (but not all) context-sensitive  expressions are interpreted not with respect to the author’s context,  but with respect to the (fictional) context of some salient  protagonist. The aim of this workshop is to gain a better  understanding of the structural mechanisms which determine  perspective- and context-shifts and to clarify the relations between  the two types of phenomena: In particular, is (partial) context-shift  just an extreme form of perspective-shift or are two entirely  different mechanisms at play?

Venue: Thursday: Neuer Senatssaal (Main Building, Albertus Magnus Platz) and Friday: Conference Room at Pohlighaus (Pohligstr. 1).

June 11 - 12 2015: Workshop on Dynamic Modeling, University of Cologne

Organizers: Doris Mücke, Anne Hermes, Louis Goldstein

The aim of this workshop is primarily to bring together people doing research on different dynamical systems, as well as related areas, to pool resources and exchange ideas in an interdisciplinary context.  We will address questions such as the following: What do we learn from the movement patterns of invertebrates about human tongue movements in spoken language? What do birds songs tell us about human intonation patterns? What do we learn from atypical speech when linguistic constituents seem to be blurred? Is there a line between prosody and segments? How can we model articulatory behaviour with respect to perception?

If you would like to attend the workshop, please register via email to anne.hermes@uni-koeln.de. Number of places available is limited. For more information: http://dymo.uni-koeln.de/

June 1 2015: Inauguration of the Sociolinguistic Lab, University of Cologne

Aria Adli invites to the Inauguration of the Sociolinguistic Lab on June 1st 2015, 6 p.m. in Aula 2, main building, University of Cologne
